An Overview of Tattoo Designs and Their Meanings

There are several tattoo designs you can choose from starting from the ancient Polynesian designs to contemporary designs. Tattoo designs usually have a meaning associated with them and it is important to understand what each design symbolizes before you decide to get it etched permanently on your body.

A Maori tattoo usually displayed the entire family and personal history of the person bearing the tattoo. It was meant to serve as a sort of identification. The Haida tattoo on the other hand generally depicted events that had mythological connotations like an encounter with a supernatural being by an ancestor.
Tattoos of celestial bodies have several meanings attached to them. The meaning of a star depends on the number of points it has and even the orientation of the star means something. Zodiac signs have a huge fan following and are generally meant to convey the sign under which the person was born.

Spiritual and supernatural tattoos like the Cross, Dragon, Fairy, Phoenix, etc, have several meanings. The Cross generally symbolizes religious affiliation; the Phoenix is a representation of the rising and setting sun; the Fairy symbolizes innocence and a wish to remain a child filled with wonder; the Dragon depicts an amoral state where nothing is bad and nothing is good; the Kanji symbolizes cherry blossoms and an Eastern philosophy; and Celtic tattoos depict the seasons and cycles of life with no beginning or end.

Animal and bird tattoos are also very popular. A Butterfly symbolizes Fire and serves as a reminder of nature's mysteries and the rich and diverse imagination of the human mind. A Swallow has a deeper meaning and portrays the soul of the dead and the omnipresent stars. Wings depict the strength of an eagle and the light flight of the butterfly.

While an Eagle is usually opted for by freedom lovers symbolizing an unchallenged free spirit with the ability of the eagle to fly to high altitudes and swoop down into valleys. The Lion means loyalty while the Tiger shows passion and beauty and power and cruelty.

The Crown is a tattoo used by many to convey their own control over their life and an ability to use their knowledge and power in a just and righteous manner.

Flowers generally symbolize nature, the cycle of birth, reproduction, death, and rebirth. Roses mostly signify a pure love and a Heart to remind one of the persons you love.

For those of you who are not looking for any serious meanings attached to your tattoo, the picture of a girl with a perfect figure may be your kind of tattoo or the threatening Skull & Crossbones!

As you can see, selecting a tattoo is not just about getting some picture painted on your skin but a mark of who you are and how you want to be perceived by the world and the society you live in.

Never rush in to get a tattoo on an impulse as you are sure to regret it later. Your tattoo is a permanent symbol, so make sure you research each design thoroughly so that it remains meaningful for the rest of your life.
